Home Remedies For Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
By Coleen Bennett

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by the compression of the nerve that passes through the wrist bones. Pain, stiffness and weakness in the fingers result. Inflammation of the tissue in the wrist makes the problem worse. Carpal Tunnel has been around for many years, but now that so many people spend their whole work day typing at a computer keyboard, it’s become part of our everyday language.

Doctors often prescribe pain relievers and tell you to stop making the repetitive motion that’s causing the problem. For many of us, that would mean stopping tasks required in our job. There are, however, ways to slow down Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Try to reduce the worst repetitive motions. For example, is the forefinger on you “mouse” hand hurting? Learn and use the keyboard strokes for the things you usually use the mouse for. Switch the mouse to the other hand for a while. This takes some practice, but it can be done. Exercise your fingers in different way. Stretch and clench your hands. Use Chinese exercise balls. Move the balls in your hand in a smooth motion either clockwise or counterclockwise. Try reversing the direction or rotating them without letting them touch each other. This will strengthen and flex your whole hand. Take frequent breaks from the keyboard and mouse to exercise your hands.

Treat the inflammation with aspirin or ibuprofen. There are also herbal remedies for inflammation, which include chamomile, pineapple, red pepper, turmeric, cumin, sage.

In this computer centric world, it’s difficult to imagine an easy alternative for typing away at a keyboard. As computer using Americans age and arthritis arrives, we’ll need to find a solution. Maybe they’ll invent a computer that we can use just with our minds!
