Involuntary reflexes are of various forms but the most irksome of them all are hiccups. Hiccups are caused when there are contractions in the muscles in the diaphragm and these irritations cause erratic breathing sounds. It has also been noted that spicy food and overeating also cause hiccups. Other than these two, some stomach and kidney infections may result in hiccups as well. Some of the hiccups related cases are spontaneous but a few of them may be because of some specific problem. Even some normal and average things like crying out loud and smoking tobacco can also trigger hiccups. It may not happen every time but abnormal inhalation of any sort is capable of resulting in hiccups. Usually, if one wants to stay away from hiccups, it should be made sure that the diaphragm in not irritated. Obviously, if the diaphragm is made to change its state, it will result in some sort of action.

Hiccups are known to fade away after an hour or so but there are some remedies that can be used if you want to get rid of them at the earliest. To eliminate hiccups one can follow the below-mentioned home remedies-

Drink water regularly and after short intervals of time.

Gargle with lukewarm water.

Prepare a mixture of curd and salt and eat it.

Suck small pieces of ginger.

Eat 1 tablespoon of sugar slowly.

Boil around 5 cardamoms in water and let half the amount of water evaporate. Drink the remaining lukewarm water.

Try inhaling black pepper. The herb will result in a forceful sneeze and help the diaphragm relieve.

Drink water while covering your ears. Make sure that you drink the water in a gulp without breathing in between.

Crush ice cubes and suck them.

Mix clarified butter with an equal amount of mustard seed and swallow the resultant mixture.

Eat a spoon full of peanut butter.

Try diverting your mind elsewhere.

Breathe with full force into a brown bag. The strong breathing restores the diaphragm to its normal state. You can also try the counter-part of this technique i.e. holding your breath for a few seconds.

Try to keep an ice pack on the rib cage.

Because indigestion is considered to be a reason for hiccups, make sure to eat light and eat healthy.

Usually, hiccups last for an hour or so, but if the hiccups are severe and last for more than a day then consult a doctor immediately. Although there is no definitive cure for hiccups, some physicians recommend Chlorpromazine to get rid of them. The treatment of hiccups can be either pharmacologic or non-pharmacologic.
