Sore Throat Remedies
By Elizabeth Noble

A sore, red and swollen throat can make you feel sick and miserable. Fortunately there are a host of natural sore throat remedies that can get you feeling better fast. The beauty of these natural sore throat remedies is that you can find a lot of the ingredients at home. Unlike conventional medicine these remedies have no nasty side effects, and are safe even for children.

These are some of the most popular sore throat remedies that I dispense to my patients:

Salt water gargle

Add half teaspoon of salt and a pinch of cayenne pepper to ¼ cup of warm water. Gargle with this mix for a minute or two. Repeat as needed or at least 3 times a day. The cayenne pepper numbs the nerves in the throat and can relieve the pain. The salt and warm water cleanses the throat and rinses away any microbes or toxins.

Ginger syrup

You can buy commercial preparations of ginger syrup which combine ginger, Manuka honey and apple cider vinegar. Alternatively make your own up by adding 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger to 1 teaspoon of honey with added apple cider vinegar to taste. Sip the syrup straight off the spoon or dissolve it in hot water to soothe the pain and heal the throat.

Hot lemon tea

Squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a cup of hot water. Add some grated ginger, garlic, cayenne and honey to make it even more effective. This is one of the best natural sore throat remedies around, and has the added benefit of killing off the microbes causing the infection.

Steam inhalation

Sit with your head over a bowel of hot water. Cover your head with a towel and breathe deeply for a few minutes. Add a pinch of salt or a teaspoon of tea leaves to boost the steam’s cleansing properties. Some of my patients like to add a few drops of an anti-viral oil like tea tree, thyme or eucalyptus oil.

Chicken soup

Make up a big pot of chicken broth. Load it up with lots of garlic, onion, ginger and turmeric to help thin and expel the mucus from your system. This is one of the natural sore throat remedies that can comfort your soul, particularly if it reminds you of your grandmother’s home cooking!

Eat lightly

One of the least expensive natural sore throat remedies is your diet. If your throat is really red and swollen do not eat any solid food. Aim for a liquid-only diet of broths, chicken soups, herbal teas and freshly squeezed vegetable juices. Sucking on some ice chips and/or zinc lozenges can help reduce the swelling.

When your throat improves you can add some soft fruits like kiwi, fresh pineapple and paw paw which are excellent for reducing inflammation. Protein foods like scrambled eggs, protein smoothies (get a sugar free powder like whey protein) and stir fries with fish, chicken or lean red meat are good options for when your appetite returns.

Vitamins and minerals

Essential nutrients that are powerful natural sore throat remedies include vitamin C, vitamin A, zinc and the B complex. These can help boost your immune system, fight the microbe causing the infection and reduce inflammation. If you have problems swallowing then a powdered or liquid supplement is probably best for you.

Pain killers

I do not advise using any aspirin for painful throats as there is a very slight risk of complications with Reye’s Syndrome – a potentially serious illness which causes brain inflammation and liver problems. You can try a safer alternative like Panadeine, or better still for natural sore throat remedies, try a herbal or homeopathic remedy.

7 Home Remedies For Snoring
By Russell Power

There are some home remedies for snoring that can actually change your life. As any sleep deprived person will tell you, your ability to function properly and deal with life is impaired if you do not get enough rest. Try these solutions today and see if you benefit:

1) If you only snore mildly while sleeping on your back, changing position will probably cure your problem. Try sleeping on your side and telling your partner to kick you if you roll over!

2) Try removing your pillow. Sleeping without a pillow may prevent you making noises while breathing resulting in a better night’s sleep for everyone. If you cannot face sleeping without a pillow, buy a contour one to see if it works for you. You will have to give it a fair trial though as some testers found it difficult to get used to.

3) Do you use sleeping pills? The problem is that these medications often cause your muscles to relax and make snoring worse. Your lack of sleep may be linked to your snoring so you should see your doctor and ask for a referral to an ear, nose and throat specialist. They will carry out some tests to establish the cause and then work out a treatment for you.

4) We like to drink alcohol as we think is helps us to relax. The problem is that it exacerbates snoring in most people so you should try and avoid it before going to bed.

5) Do you need to lose weight? Being overweight will hinder a good night’s sleep. Try switching to a healthy eating regime combined with moderate regular exercise. You should notice an improvement in a couple of weeks. Get your friends and family involved to support you. As a nation, we would all benefit from more exercise and improvements in our diet. You are more likely to stick to your new regime if you feel that you are not on your own.

6) Antihistamines’ and other similar remedies can actually cause snoring as they relax your throat muscles. If your snoring is a side effect of new medication, speak to your doctor as he may be able to prescribe an alternative.

7) Singing can help as it will exercise and strengthen your throat. Try joining a choir or a musical society and see if you reap these benefits.

If you try all of the above home remedies for snoring without success, you may find that using dental devices or specialized surgery may help.

Are you serious about wanting to stop snoring? If you are then you will want the best and most cost effective way to stop snoring, right? If you are serious then this simple amazing product will help you. This genius innovation has been feature on many television programs including CNN. And all the reviews have been totally positive.
Scars – Home Remedies for Scars
By Dr John Anne

A scar is the pinkish or brown patch of skin that grows in the place where you once had a wound or sore. They are areas of fibrous tissue that replace normal skin tissue after destruction of some of the dermis. A scar is thus the skin’s natural way of repairing itself from injury. Most people have scars.

The word scar is derived from the Greek word eschara, meaning fireplace.

Every skin injury or wound heals with a scar. The appearance of a scar however depends on the type and extent of the wound, as well as how an individual’s body heals.

Scar tissue is not similar to the tissue that it replaces and is usually of inferior quality. There is no hair growth on the scar tissue, and the skin there becomes less resistant to ultraviolet radiation.

How scarring occurs?

Scarring occur when the deep dermis layer of skin is damaged. The deeper the damage, the worse the scar.

Many skin scars are pale and leave a trace of the original injury that caused them. The time that a scar takes to form may range from a few days to, in some serious and rare cases, several years. Various treatments can speed up the process in serious cases.

To repair the damage, the body has to lay down new collagen tissues As the body cannot re-build the tissue exactly as it was, the scar tissue will have a different texture and quality than the surrounding normal tissue. An injury does not become a scar until the wound has completely healed.

Factors affecting scar formation -

Many factors affect the severity of scar formation, such as -

-	The size and depth of the wound.

-	Location of the injury on the body.

-	The blood supply to the area.

-	Age of the person

-	The thickness, type and colour of the person’s skin.

-	The direction of the scar.

Once a scar forms, it is permanent. However, it may be made less visible or displaced surgically.

Can scars be completely removed?

There is no way to remove scars completely. However, a skilled surgeon can definitely improve the appearance of the scar by disguising it, relocating it, or minimizing its prominence.

Skin colour and type, age, and the size of the scar, are important factors that go on to decide the outcome of a surgery to remove a scar.

Different types of scars respond to different plastic surgery techniques. Timing of the surgery is another important factor. The younger the scar, the more satisfactory is the result of the surgery. Therefore, if you want to have your scar removed, do not wait, until as advised by the doctor.

Types of scars -

1. Keloid scars:

Keloids are itchy clusters of scar tissue that grow beyond the edges of the wound or incision. They occur when the body continues to produce the tough, fibrous protein known as collagen after a wound has healed. They are more common in dark-skinned people.

Keloids are treated by injecting a steroid medication directly into the scar tissue to reduce redness and itching. However, the disheartening fact is that keloids have a tendency to recur, sometimes even larger than before, thus requiring repeated procedures.

2. Hypertrophic scars:

These scars, unlike keloids, remain within the limits of the original wound. They often improve on their own, though it may take a year or more. They may also require steroid applications or in some cases may have to be improved surgically.

3. Contractures:

Burns or other injuries that result in the loss of a large area of skin may form a scar that pulls the edges of the skin together, a process called contraction.

Improving a contracture usually involves cutting out the scar and replacing it with a skin graft or a flap. In some cases, a procedure known as Z-plasty may be used.

4. Facial scars:

Mostly, facial scars are cut out and closed with tiny stitches, leaving a less noticeable scar. Some facial scars can be softened using a technique called dermabrasion, that leaves a smoother surface to the skin, but does not completely erase the scar.

Scar treatment procedures -

No scar can be completely removed. They will always leave behind a trace, but a number of procedures can improve their appearance.

Surgery -

Surgery will never completely remove a scar but can be used to alter its location or shape to make it less noticeable. Surgery is at times necessary to remove a scar on skin near a joint where it restricts movement, but it will leave another scar.

Laser surgery & resurfacing -

The use of laser on scars is still on an experimental phase, as the safety or effectiveness has not yet been proven.

Steroid injections -

A course of steroid injections into the scar may help flatten and soften the appearance of keloid or hypertrophic scars.

Z-Plasty -

Z-plasty is a surgical technique used to relocate a scar so that it more closely matches to the natural creases of the skin, where it will be less noticeable. In this procedure, the old scar is removed and new incisions are made on each side, creating small triangular flaps of skin.

Skin grafting -

Grafting involves the transfer of skin from a healthy part of the body to cover the injured area. All grafts leave some scarring at the donor and recipient sites.

Make sure that your expectations from any surgery are realistic. You cannot expect that old scars will completely disappear; however, they will always turn flatter, paler and softer.

Home remedies to lessen scars -

o	A mixture of sandalwood paste and black gram paste helps reduce the intensity of scars if started early.

o	Rubbing your skin with ice cubes helps to tighten the skin.

o	You can use cucumber and lemon juice on your scars.

o	Vitamin E oil when applied on the scarred skin may do wonders for your skin.

o	To prevent deepening of the scars, apply aloe vera gel, cod liver oil or vitamin E oil.

o	Applying cocoa butter is also a good remedy in getting rid of the scars.

Home Remedies Help Stop Smoking
By Nathalie Fiset

You want to break the smoking habit without having to see specialists or having to endure the taxing process of medication, nicotine replacement products and counseling? Well our old folks and Asian neighbors have developed various home remedies that would help you quit the smoking, maybe even for good. They are as follows:

Eat foods high in base content- Alkaline is said to repress the urge to smoke. This works by changing the preference of taste in your taste buds. Somehow, our taste buds are conditioned to like the taste of smoke and the other substances and food we have associated with the habit. In India, people often use this technique to remove their craving for smoke. Boiled oats, particularly, are said to control opium addiction.

The common end effect of alkaline treatment is that it decreases, to a high degree, the smoker’s cigarettes for both opium and cigarette. Aside from boiled oats, other alternatives include beet greens, figs, raisins, dried lima beans, spinach, almonds and dandelion greens.

Chinese people, on the other hand, resolve to juice solutions. For them, it is effective to mix 2 tsp honey and grated fresh radish. Radish effectively changes the inclination of the taste buds to like cigarette taste due to its bitter taste while honey gives a touch of sweetness to the drink.

For a very simplistic approach, you can lick salts with the tip of your tongue in case you feel the drive to smoke another stick.

Chewing something or holding anything in the smoker’s mouth almost always work in exchange for the habit created by the cigarette. Some people chew cigarette candy which mimics the actual material that they put in their mouths. Usually, it takes as much time to chew on the candy as with the smoking of the cigarette. People of the West Indies, however, prefer chewing on sugar cane stalks and licorice sticks. This is a very traditional approach to quitting cigarette for a very long time. One American doctor tried to put this into medical practice and worked well with his patients. While they may not be a bounty supply of sugar cane stalks in our part of the world, we could make a good use of the licorice sticks.

Cigarette cessation often has to deal with the oral fixation of smoking. The people of southeastern United States had made it a practice to nibble on birch tree branches in order to curb the urges of smoking.

Cutting down on the nicotine content of the cigarette will help a lot in the depreciation of want for nicotine. For Indians, who started smoking, tobacco is not the only ingredient of their smokes and smoking is not treated as an effective answer to boredom. Instead, it is used for rituals and more ceremonial events such as tribal meetings and nuptials. The thing is, what they smoke is not pure nicotine-bombarded tobacco. They integrate a lot of herbs to compensate for flavor and to limit the nicotine substance contained in a single tobacco. You can try it yourself. There are lots of herbal stores which sell herbal cigarettes while providing the same sensation. You can also roll your own fillers by mixing beech tree leaves which were largely used during the World War I, rosemary which was used by Englishmen n their cigarette mixtures, myrica gale which was popular among Norwegians, tonka beans, silk corn, licorice, marjoram and sage.

If you wanted to quit smoking with the group support of your officemates, here’s a good tip for you. Japanese people have yielded effective results keeping heir employees awake by circulating through the central air conditioning system certain essential oils such as cypress, lemon and peppermint. The good thing is it has its efficient side effect- it tends to curb the urge for these men to smoke. if you want, you can also use this action not to only help everyone ins your office quit smoking but to also keep everyone’s minds awake.

There’s no one smoker who do not want to break the habit but not everyone can do it. Also, not everyone could accept the fact that they should rely on more conventional products such as those we have referred earlier. Home remedies to stop the smoking habit would not only provide easy solutions but would also cut off, to a great extent, the expenses that would be incurred using other means for cigarette cessation.

Puffy Eyes Remedies
By Hugh Barry

The first thing I want to point out is that everyone’s body is different. Wouldn’t it be boring and bizarre if we were all the same So the suggestions I am giving are what has, and has not, worked for me.

I have had what is commonly referred to as puffy eyes or bags under the eyes since I was 26; I am now a 34 year old male in very good shape. I’ve always taken pride in my appearance, so when I started to have daily baggy eyes, it became a concern to me. Naturally, I searched the internet for resources and suggestions. Most of the one’s I found said to try putting ice cubes, cucumbers, tea bags, steak or a cold spoon on the problem area. I even came across a couple of suggestions to try Preparation-H I have read that the Preparation-H suggestion was actually dangerous, so don’t try that.

Which of these worked and which one’s didn’t? I should also note that I have tried a number of inexpensive, as well as expensive, creme’s that are supossed to help puffy eyes. These creme’s are usually found at pharmacies and online health and beauty websites. None of these creme’s helped me one bit. What has worked best for me is tea (black tea) bags.

What you do is boil water and put 2 tea bags in like you would if you were going to make tea. After brewing for 5 minutes, take the tea bags out…ring out the liquid…and now put them in the freezer. You need to have them cool, but not frozen. I say keep them in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. Now lay down and apply the tea bags over the puffy areas under your eyes.

I try to leave them on for 15 minutes, turning them over 1/2 way through. After, make sure you rinse off any residue with a cold damp tissue or face cloth.

I find this has helped reduce puffiness, but is no cure. I am strongly considering seeing a certified Plastic Surgeon to get a professional opion on how to more permanently get rid of the excess fat under my eyes.

I have this article and others on my website http://www.plasticsurgerysurgeons.com and links to board certified plastic surgeons for puffy eyes and other plastic surgery procedures.

Top Tips To Relieve Cuts And Scrapes
By Raymond Geok Seng Lee

An unpleasant encounter with a kitchen knife. An embarrassing stumble during your daily constitutional. A too-close shave with a razor blade. All manner of everyday activities can leave you with the unkindest cut or scrape of all. No matter how thick-skinned you are, these minor injuries hurt. Their small size often belies the pain they can cause. Still, you probably won’t win much sympathy for your agony when what you are sure is a mortal wound turns out to be nothing more than a paper cut. Actually, any pain you experience is a good thing. It reminds you to take care of that cut or scrape proto. And that is important, because any open wound even a small one is an open invitation to infection caused by bacteria.

Here are some ways you can consider to help you to speed your healing process and to relieve any discomfort.

Stem the flow. Compression not only stops the bleeding but also helps reduce the pain. It is recommended applying firm pressure directly over the injury with a clean cloth for 5 to 10 minutes. The blocked blood flow exerts pressure on the pain fibers, so you feel pressure rather than pain.

Keep it clean. Flush a cut or scrape with running water to help remove the dirt and debris. Cleansing the wound is vital to reduce the risk of infection.

Do not forget to dress. Apply an antibiotic ointment to the cut or scrape, then cover it with an adhesive bandage or a piece of gauze. Besides, keeping the wound clean and protected, the dressing is also likely to ease pain. It will remind you that the cut or scrape is there, so you are less likely to bump it. Leave the wound uncovered at night so that it can breathe.

Say hello to aloe. An old standby as a treatment for burns, aloe vera is great first-aid for cuts and scrapes as well. The cool, colorless gel seals off the wound, relieves the pain, and speeds healing. Simply break a leaf off an aloe vera plant and squeeze the leaf’s contents onto your cut or scrape. Apply the gel three or four times a day for maximum benefit.

Go krazy. The neatest thing in the world for a paper cut is an instant glue such as Krazy Glue. Apply it directly to the cut twice a day. It immediately seals off the cut and stops the air from hitting the nerve endings, which is what causes the pain. If you don’t happen to have the glue on hand or if you are wary of using it, try petroleum jelly instead. It protects exposed skin tissue from the air and the moisture helps new tissue to grow.

Hands off. Once a cut or scrape forms a scab, leave it alone. Besides being painful, picking away a scab is picking away protection. A scab’s nature’s way of putting a dressing on a wound, if you pick at it, the wound may reopen, and the healing process will have to start all over again.

Simple Steps for Dealing With Nosebleeds
By Charles Kassotis

Our Nose can start bleeding suddenly and unexpectedly, from one or both nostrils, leaving us surprised and startled. If this occurs on a regular basis, we should ask ourselves why this is happening, and what can we do to prevent it.

It is a common myth that nosebleeds happen due to high blood pressure. That is not entirely correct. Your doctor will measure your blood pressure not because it has caused the bleeding, but to calm you down and because that is a standard medical procedure.

Your Nose might start bleeding for several reasons. A nosebleed isn’t a symptom of any serious disease. Only general clotting disorders can cause your nose to bleed and these usually cause bleeding to other parts of the body as well, such as in your mouth, gums and under the skin. Nasal membranes often suffer from infections like when we catch a cold. Another cause of nosebleeds can come from trauma to the nose, by nose picking or foreign objects, even when we blow our nose too hard. A dry environment may also be responsible. Lack of humidity dries of the nasal membranes. This may occur more often in the dry summer climate or in wintertime, when temperature and humidity levels fluctuate alot, heaters dry the room atmosphere, and respiratory infections are frequent.

During a nosebleed, you may see one or both nostrils bleed. You may also feel fluid flow in the back of the nose and throat.

Sit down and gently lean forward. Don’t lean your head backwards or you will swallow the blood. Open your mouth so that you can breathe through it. Pinch the soft parts of the nose together between the thumb and index finger. Hold it for 10 minutes and repeat the procedure until the bleeding stops. That will stop the vessels that are bleeding by forming a small blood thrombus. Don’t blow your nose for at least 12 hours because the thrombus might be blown away and the vessels will reopen. Then you can blow gently to remove the blood clot that has been formed in your nose. It may also help to apply a cold compress across the bridge of your nose.

If the bleeding persists or reoccurs, you should see a doctor. He will gently pack the inside of your nose with gauze or, if bleeding still persists, he may need to cauterize the vessels with the use of a heated instrument or caustic chemical. If fierce hitting is what caused the nosebleed, ask to be examined for abnormalities in the diaphragm, which can cause breathing problems later.

After a nosebleed you have to be careful for 12 hours at least. Don’t lift heavy objects. Don’t take aspirin or other medications that thin the blood. Do not smoke or be exposed to dry climate, as this will cause further irritation in the nasal membranes. Instead, choose a moist environment to keep your nose moist as well. You can use a humidifier if the indoor atmosphere is too dry. Also do not pick your nose or force objects in it.

The next time you experience a nosebleed, don’t panic. Nobody likes the view of blood coming out of his or her nose, but it’s probably nothing serious. Follow these simple steps and you will be fine in no time.

Get Rid of Nausea In 6 Easy Ways
By Mike Bedard

If you are desperate to get rid of nausea, you will be glad to know that there are several home remedies to help you get rid of nausea easily. However, before you start taking the remedies, you need to identify the source of nausea. What is it that is the cause behind your nausea? In this article, I will tell you how to identify the cause of nausea, and how to get rid of it at the same time.

1. There are several causes behind nausea. Nausea can be caused after the intake of a certain food. Identify which foods cause nausea, and exclude them from your diet.

For example, some people have nausea after they drink milk or eat dairy products. If your nausea is caused after eating dairy products, then you are suffering from lactose intolerance. There is no need to panic though, because there are certain medicines you can take which will cure your lactose intolerance.

2. If the culprit is not food, then it can be medicines. Some medicines cause nausea in the patient as a side effect. If you know of any medications that is causing nausea, consult with your doctor and ask him to replace it with an alternative medicine, or at least reduce the dosage of the medication

3. Do you drink alcohol? If so, do you get nauseous after drinking alcohol? If yes, then try to drink as much water as you can before and after drinking alcohol. You may also want to try Alka-Seltzer in the morning.

4. Another way to get rid of nausea is to eat crackers whenever you feel nauseous. Doctors suggest that if you eat a few low-fat crackers per day, it will help you get rid of nausea. Don’t eat too much of crackers, though. While a few crackers are good for you, eating too many crackers will only worsen your situation.

5. Keep your mind and brain busy. Participate in quiz contests; solve complex puzzles that require you to think long and hard. These activities will stimulate your brain. Once you get your mind and brain busy, you will forget about nausea and in this way you will be able to alleviate nausea to some extent. Remember that nausea has a lot to do with our mind. The less you think about it, the better for you.

6. Relax. Sometimes too much work can take a toll on your body. Relaxing at your home or in the park will do you good.

You don’t need to spend a penny on medicines, because there are several home remedies that will help you get rid of nausea fast.

Don’t let nausea play havoc with your life!
